WatchMyGear keeps an eye on assets

Wellington development house Abletech, the technical brains behind the Sharesight investment management app, has a new offering for organisations to track assets.

WatchMyGear is an Android app/web dashboard combo that lets businesses track assets using QR codes and their smartphone. Once companies sign up to one of a range of plans, they can use existing barcodes, download their own QR codes and get stickers printed, or order QR codes and stickers from Abletech.

After downloading the app they scan the sticker on the asset using Android devices, sending the location via GPS and the mobile network or wifi to be viewable in real time on the Master Map web-based dashboard, in map or list form.

Organisations can keep track of the number of assets being used, the time an asset is off site, the average number of times it’s scanned per person per day, and when it’s been scanned at unknown sites.

Abletech says its adding new features likes dispatch management, vehicle tracking and notes to scans. The plans range from $49 a month, with two users and 100 assets, to Platinum, which includes dispatch, 100 users and 100,000 assets.

Managing director Carl Penwarden says his team dreamed up WatchMyGear after customers repeatedly asked for asset tracking tools to replace paper of spreadsheet-based systems. He says existing tools were expensive and hard to use.

“Our research shows that many waste management companies are struggling to record where all their skips and bins are currently located and even whether skips have been delivered in the first place. There are also a number of construction companies currently in the dark about what mobile gear is at each project site.”

WatchMyGear will be marketed to hire and lease companies and medical supply firms as well as these construction and waste management businesses, Penwarden says.

One company is trialling WatchMyGear and Abletech hopes to take it to markets in Australia, North America and Europe. It will showcase the app as a finalist in the BNZ Startup Alley at Webstock this week.
