A Kiwi IT firm has launched a cloud storage app with similar features to Dropbox and other internationally-developed services in the genre.

Layer3 is touting the locally-built service, Filecloud, as an alternative those offered by international players because it’s locally hosted at the company’s datacentre in Wellington and locally supported. It provides the ability to share files in real time among teams using devices, or company wide using a server.

Filecloud supports most cloud agents (the software that lets machines back up locally), like iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and Linux.

The company plans to add Windows Phone Support early next year.

As well as cloud storage, Filecloud has an administration dashboard for managing account creation and deletion, passwords and permissions.

It works with Layer3’s virtual office suite. “It means we can provide an end-to-end cloud computing solution for customers with just one PC or with hundreds,” says CEO Hayden Kirk.

“Currently in New Zealand you don’t have much of a choice when it comes to cloud storage. The main providers of cloud storage in New Zealand tend to offer some type of backup services.”

Layer3 is offering a free 30 day trial of the app, as well as three plans priced from $15 per user per month for a minimum of three users and 250GB of data.

It’s not the first time the company has localised an international software offering. It created its own version of the Microsoft Office 365 portal last year.

The firm started in 2005 as a managed service provider for small and medium sized companies.

It has four staff and was a finalist in the Innovation category of the 2013 Westpac Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.
