Greg, who’s been a fan of Idealog for a few years now, was interviewed for our feature story on the design industry and the pervasive culture of working for free. We’d been keeping an eye on his work for awhile and knew he’d be the perfect candidate to illustrate the story – and our cover. (He’s just taken the plunge and is now fully self-employed – so get in touch if you want some of the magic for yourself.)

The result is unmistakably Greg: striking colours and simplified geometric shapes, that in this case interlock like a contemporary patchwork quilt.

“I’m a creative so I began by thinking of all the things I use for work, the first being my Mac, mouse and I guess these days my phone,” he says.

“I looked around the studio and as all good ideas start on paper I added pencils, pens, cutting knives, a ruler, note pad and other stationery equipment. Then I thought about the whole working for free thing and illustrated a calculator with $00.00 on it and placed a dollar sign on the computer screen … It was a bit of a puzzle and took a few days.”

An Elam grad, Greg’s handiwork includes illustrations for Westpac, Chelsea, 2Degrees, Greenpeace, Auckland Zoo, Huffer and many many more. Last year he illustrated children’s book While You Are Sleeping, winner of The Storylines Notable Book Award 2014. His greatest sporting achievement to date is winning first place in an egg and spoon race, June 1981.
