Imagine Cup finds best of the best

The winners of this year’s Imagine Cup are out and it’s medical monitoring tool Decim, Meetup platform Meep and gaming project Sentinel taking top honours.

Decim won the World Citizenship award for its tool that addresses the lack of awareness of sleep disorders by providing an opportunity to users to screen themselves for sleep apnea via its application and the Kinect. It can capture heart rate and respiratory rate, store and analyse the information and give users an indicator of the risk of sleep apnea.

Meep was the innovation category winner, with an an interactive platform for users to see their friends in real time on a map and visualise how far they are from that meet-up location and recommended places to meet.

The top 14 finalists presented proposals to judges at the University of Auckland Business School. Each of the three winning teams were representing the university.

The global competition is in its 16th year and sees student technologists and entrepreneurs develop solutions and business plans to solve a worldwide problem.

This year there were 73 entries from around New Zealand. Kiwi teams have finished in the top six at the Worldwide Finals three times since 2010.

“In the past New Zealanders have done extremely well in this competition,” says US consul general Jim Donegan, a major supporter of the competition.

“Often all it takes is an opportunity like the Imagine Cup to turn an idea from a hobby into a career.”

The top teams in each category were:

World Citizenship Category Winner – Decim

Runner up – LONZ

Innovation Category Winner – Meep

Runner up – Ohiti

Games Category Winner – Sentinel

Runner up – MK2
