Lightning Lab gets Auckland home

The Icehouse is calling on expressions of interest as it brings the Lightning Lab digital accelerator to Auckland.

The accelerator first ran in Wellington in 2013 and returned for another round in that city this year with 10 teams.

The Icehouse-hosted programme is scheduled for March next year, following the same model of three months of mentoring, idea refinement and pitch training, followed by a demo day where founders pitch to investors.

As well as access to mentors, speakers, investors and and potential partners and customers, the Icehouse is offering $18,000 in seed funding for each venture, along with credits from Amazon Web Services, Paypal, Microsoft and Rackspace.

The business growth centre is looking for startups that are targeting large growth markets, have an idea or a prototype, at least two founding members (preferably including a technical co-founder and CEO) and entrepreneurs who can work fulltime on site during the programme.

The entrepreneurs also need to be coachable and highly motivated, it says. It’s also asking for potential investors, mentors and lab technicians.

Lightning Lab is set for a national rollout and is also partnering with the Canterbury Development Corporation to open in Christchurch. Other cities are due to start the programme from 2016.
