Jessica Hische is a wunderkind in the lettering world, in her twenties racking up a client list that includes Tiffany’s, The New York Times, Nike, and director Wes Anderson – for whom she created a curling, ’60s-American inspired alphabet that plays throughout the film Moonrise Kingdom.

Moonrise Kingdom. Lettering by Jessica Hische.
Jessica will be part of two sessions at Semi-Permanent Wellington this year, speaking in the afternoon on Wednesday November 5, and running an all-day Monogram Workshop the following day.

And then there’s Tony Brook, founder of publishing company Unit Editions and London-based design studio Spin.

Tony works with author Adrian Shaughnessy to publish books ‘by designers, for designers’ leaning on his vast career in the design brand identity field.

The past and current clientele of Spin, of which Tony is also creative director, include auction house Christie’s, TV station Channel 4, Wired magazine, and a host of top galleries, including Haunch of Venison and Whitechapel.

If you ever wanted to learn more about the art of successful brand design (you should always be wanting to learn more about this), get yourself down to Tony’s Identity Workshop on the Thursday.

Also presenting at this year’s Semi-Permanent Wellington is Carin Svensson, co-founder of one of Sweden’s leading and internationally recognised design and branding agencies BVD; musician and artist Reg Mombassa (you’ll know at least one person with a Mambo t-shirt emblazoned with his illustrations); photojournalist Antonin Kratochvil, whose work takes him into the realm of Hollywood stars one moment and war victims the next; Phillip Andrew, executive creative director of Clemenger BBDO Wellington; the team at digital production company Resn; and Tom Uglow of Google’s Creative Lab in Sydney, talking emerging digital technology and how creatives can get involved.

And with Tom comes an installation called The Cube, an interactive filmmaking device which will show in collaboration with Google’s Creative Lab, Semi-Permanent, and The Sweet Shop’s Steve Ayson and Damien Shatford. Have fun, kids!

Surf, design, travel – these are the things that gets Leigh out of bed every morning (those, and a piping hot cup of milky tea). She holds qualifications in both fashion design and communications, and has written a bunch of fashion, beauty, food, travel and design stories.
