What’s on: Auckland Architecture Week

Next week, the City of Sails will be host to five days* of architectural events, organised by the New Zealand Institute of Architecture, with industry-leading speakers and topics focusing on Auckland’s design identity – which extends to its oft-used nickname.

Asks Pip Cheshire, NZIA president: “Auckland has used the ‘City of Sails’ to promote itself in the past. Isn’t it time we came ashore and defined Auckland by what it is, not what it is next to? What image of Auckland will evoke the spirit of our new city in a way that the billowing sails on the Waitemata once did?”

Some of Auckland’s top architectural photographers – Patrick Reynolds, Mark Smith, Jackie Meiring, Samuel Hartnett and David Straight – have visually responded to Pip’s question, and will show their findings in a photographic exhibition titled Auckland Redefined, opening September 26 at AUT.

Other events include Auckland – the Rise of Design-led City, a talk on the concerning lack of protection for heritage sites in Modernist Buildings under Threat, and speaker Enrique Norten of TEN Arquitectos, whose current projects include the Guggenheim Museum in Guadalajara, Mexico.

*Not seven days, as we previously reported. We need a coffee…

Surf, design, travel – these are the things that gets Leigh out of bed every morning (those, and a piping hot cup of milky tea). She holds qualifications in both fashion design and communications, and has written a bunch of fashion, beauty, food, travel and design stories.
