ASB's chief operating officer Russell Jones was named CIO of the Year at last night's CIO Summit annual dinner and  awards ceremony in Auckland.

Judges commended Jones' company influence both nationally and internationally, crediting him with leading an organisational and cultural change in one of the largest IT teams in New Zealand.

Jones said the transformation of technology functions across ASB was a team effort.

"Our people and culture are why we lead in technology and this award was earned by a unified technology team," he says.

The past year has been a big one for the bank, with some high-profile campaigns hitting the headlines and a total rebrand following a move away from its agency of 10 years.

"ASB has already had some great firsts over the past year with our Virtual Branch on Facebook and innovative products like Home Equity Release and Save the Change," Jones says. And more change is yet to come.

"We're investing further in our technology team development, to grow capabilities and deliver a significant programme of work over the next five years."

Prior to taking up his ASB role, Jones was an IT director at International Paper, and also worked at Carter Holt Harvey and Sappi.
