Businessman Lloyd Morrison loses cancer fight

Businessman and national flag campaigner Lloyd Morrison has passed away in Seattle after a battle with leukaemia, aged 54.

In 1988 Morrison founded the investment bank that would create Infratil, the Wellington-based infrastructure investment company, and was still a director at the time of his death.

Last year's NBR Rich List valued him at $100 million.

Morrison was also known for campaigning to change the national flag, playing a part in bailing out the Wellington Phoenix, and supporting the arts.

He was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2009, the same year he was diagnosed with leukaemia.

Infratil chairman David Newman issued a statement crediting Morrison's inspirational leadership, vision, charisma, and energy.

"Lloyd was a truly passionate New Zealander and he made an immeasurable contribution to both the business and arts communities in New Zealand as a friend, colleague, patron and mentor."

Prime minister John Key today also paid tribute to Morrison.

“Lloyd was a very successful businessman and, as a friend, I can say that he was also known for not being afraid to voice strong opinions – but he did this because he was totally passionate about New Zealand."

We have lost an amazingly inspirational, all-round good bloke. Family man, mentor, supporter, visionary, entrepreneurial … Lloyd was everything we could wish of a true New Zealander.
Tributes will deservedly flow but, I guess there's one Kiwi word that, while quite inadequate in many ways, covers it all in others … bugger!

Lloyd really understood how design could improve his business operations. The graphics on Infratil buses attract customers and brighten the streetscape. The Wellington Airport has become a friendly and interesting point of departure/arrival. He will be remembered with great affection and respect.
