Auckland Council has named its 21 urban design champions, charged with helping to drive Auckland towards the goal of becoming the world’s most liveable city. And with the popularity of new development Wynyard Quarter, the opening of the redeveloped Auckland Art Gallery and the buzz around the Rugby World Cup celebrations kicking off tomorrow, Ludo Campbell-Reid, the city’s urban design champion, said there’s no better time for the champions to take on their advocacy roles.

A new business-orientated initiative led by Auckland Council, called Design Landscape, is aiming to raise the international profile and export sales of architects and designers. And it says we could learn a lot from our Trans-Tasman neighbours. As part of the Designer Institute of NZ’s Designers Speak series, you have the opportunity to find out what exactly it is we can learn from The Australians.

To say the Auckland Council doesn’t always get it right when it comes to protecting our heritage buildings isn’t presumptuous. You need only look at the furore that broke out earlier this year when Turua Street’s Spanish style Art Deco cottages were demolished despite massive protests and court appeals. But now the Council is seeking expressions of interest for its new Heritage Advisory Panel which the Council says will provide independent advice on heritage issues to council decision makers.

You’d be pretty hard-pressed to find an Aucklander who doesn’t agree that more thought needs to be put into the city’s urban design planning, (just look at the numerous, ugly show-box apartments that have sprung up throughout the central city). So news that Auckland Council is being asked to commit to stronger support of urban design principles is a positive step.

While London practically hyperventilates with excitement at the news of an impending royal wedding and that ring, a more subtle celebration of royal jewels is taking place in its parks.

It’s crunch time in Turua Street as protestors today make a final stand to save three Spanish style Art Deco cottages in Auckland’s St Heliers suburb. Awaiting the arrival of bulldozers, protestors picketed through the night following an announcement by Auckland Mayor Len Brown earlier this week that last ditch negotiations between the council, the developer and local residents, had failed to bring a resolution to save the houses.

As the watchful eyes of Rugby World Cup visitors descend upon Auckland city streets, it’s hoped a new initiative involving flowerpots and decorated rubbish bags, will ensure their eyes feast on all things beautiful.
