All good things must come to an end, and that includes our regular blog updates from the super successful First Light team, who finished an impressive third place out of 19 teams at the US Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon Competition. The Victoria University team was the first team from the Southern Hemisphere to make it to the competition, an impressive feat in and of itself. In their final blog for Design Daily, the team looks back at the most memorable moments in what has been a very challenging and rewarding year.

Apart from their longer lease on life, eco bulbs don’t offer up much by way of design. Well, not until designer Tien-Ho Hsu offered up this nifty paper eco bulb. While regular energy efficient light bulbs to take up space in landfills, Hsu’s innovation, dubbed the ‘Eco Light’, is made from paper meaning the bulb can be recycled once it’s done its dash.

Having battled it out for over a week, and with years of preparation behind them, the hard work has paid off for members of Victoria University’s First Light team, with the team coming third in the US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. First Light is the first team from the Southern Hemisphere to reach the finals of the competition. With 18 other international university teams competing, the third place ranking is impressive in and of itself, but the team also aced a number of individual contests within the competition

How long does it take to put together a solar-passive house complete with all the interior fittings? Six and a half days if you’re the First Light team. With the house completed and already graced by some famous faces, the team is now focused on the contest side of things.

Here's a very cool product we spotted courtesy of endemicworld.com. This snazzy sound activated drum light does exactly what its name suggests. Hit the drum (it replicates a real drum noise - of course) and presto, you have light. Be sure to check out the video.
