  • Kiwi architecture firm nabs contract to redesign entire National Australia Bank network

    It’s always good to see Kiwis doing well overseas and the latest contract nabbed by architecture firm Warren and Mahoney is testament to that. The firm won the contract to redesign the National Australia Bank (NAB) network of banks — all 760 of them. And joining the firm on the project will be fellow Kiwi company, branding specialist and design agency DNA.

    It’s been a tumultuous time for Christchurch, but as far as its main travel hub, it’s all go with stage one of the airport’s $237 million terminal redevelopment now complete. And that’s in large part thanks to a collaborative effort between architectural firm Warren and Mahoney and the aviation design folks at Hassell.

    It looks to be business as usual for multidisciplinary design company Alt Group as it continues to rake in awards from New Zealand and abroad. The latest accolades come after three of its pieces were selected as winners in New York’s prestigious 365: AIGA Annual Design competition, which celebrates international design work that is both aesthetically challenging and effective.

But regardless of the time it takes, he says it’s imperative to incorporate local input into the rebuilding process, though he acknowledges government and nation-wide input is also critical as part of a wider framework of initiatives.
  • Ambassador and ideas for Christchurch

    The New Zealand Institute of Architects has agreed with the Christchurch City Council to provide the earthquake-hit region with an Architectural Ambassador. Architect Ian Athfield will take on the ambassador role, which will involve providing design advice and coordination during the rebuild and restoration process. Warren and Mahoney back the move and offer six of their own principles it believes should underpin future decision making on the rebuild.

    Wellington’s new Supreme Court building is on a role. Along with its nomination in the 2010 World Architecture Festival Awards mentioned in last week’s Design Daily story, the Warren and Mahoney designed building has also been shortlisted for the prestigious IStructE Structural Awards.
